Custom Braces Q & A

What is an AFO?

AFOs are custom orthoses that position your ankle, control ankle movement, accommodate areas of weakness, correct deformities, and restore ideal function in your lower legs, ankles, and feet.

There are many different types of AFOs because they're used for such a wide variety of purposes. Your AFO may be rigid, soft, or a combination of materials depending on your needs.

When do I need an AFO?

Some of the many possible reasons that your Foot & Ankle Specialists of New Mexico doctor may prescribe an AFO include:

  • Ankle instability
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Chronic ankle pain
  • Foot drop, difficulty raising the front part of your foot
  • Neurological problems affecting the feet and ankles
  • Musculoskeletal problems affecting the feet and ankles

There are a number of other reasons you may need an AFO. Often, an AFO is a vital part of your recovery because it helps you return to normal movement in a safe way.

What is a sports brace?

A sports brace is a protective device designed for optimal protection of your foot and ankle tissues. Usually, athletes wear sports braces over their socks.

As with an AFO, a sports brace is custom made for your body. Most sports braces are rigid materials, but some may be a combination of materials.

When do I need a sports brace?

If you’re recovering from a sports injury of the foot or ankle, or if you’ve recently had corrective foot or ankle surgery, your Foot & Ankle Specialists of New Mexico doctor may recommend a sports brace as part of your recovery.

Sometimes, athletes wear sports braces as protective devices when they’re perfectly healthy, as the high-impact materials can withstand hard contact without damaging your foot or ankle, and they can also help you achieve peak performance by correcting your ankle and foot position and movement.

How are custom braces made?

Foot & Ankle Specialists of New Mexico is nationally accredited as a durable medical equipment manufacturer, which means they fabricate most custom braces in their on-site lab. The staff pedorthist fits patients with custom braces to ensure an optimal fit.
